01:24:50
Thank you!
Pamela Reid
01:24:57
Will there be an opportunity for us to ask specific questions?
Lindsay Louis
01:25:43
If everyone could mute please
Lisa Brady
01:26:52
I do not see the QA
Diane Grace
01:26:53
You are using a meeting and not a webinar. There is no QA
Susan McCrory
01:27:30
We've been trying for days to get past that part of the FAFSA app wherein one is transferred to the IRS site in order to have the IRS send to FAFSA TY 2020 information. When will this part of the FAFSA/IRS site be running successfully?
Lindsay Louis
01:27:43
OK to use Chat to get your questions answered
Wayne Meyer
01:28:41
I've done FAFSA for eight years with my other kids, so I'm wondering if there is something different this year - AND - is there something specific to FAFSA for Massachusetts? I would think no since it's a federal program
Lindsay Louis
01:28:51
Susan, I was not aware this was an issue with this.
Jessica Wright-Mullin
01:28:55
My husband died 3 weeks ago. What do I do to reflect our very different financial situation with twins going to college?
Roger Cruz
01:28:57
@susan, I used the website FAFSA form yesterday and it was super easy to connect to the IRS and get the data transferred (about 3-5 clicks)
Lindsay Louis
01:29:33
@Wayne, nothing different. If a MA resident you may qualify for MA state grants
Kelly Burns
01:29:52
I will have 2 students next year. Do I need to create a profile for each child?
Lindsay Louis
01:30:11
@Jessica, I am sorry for your loss. If you are completing it today, you are going to do it as widowed.
Lindsay Louis
01:30:26
Yes, each child needs their own FSA ID
Wayne Meyer
01:30:31
OK, that's different for me because I filled them out when we lived in Texas. So the state grant part you mentioned will be part of this presentation?
Kathleen Gabriel
01:30:51
hi we have twins both going to be college freshmen fall 22
Lindsay Louis
01:30:57
It’s automatic by saying your state of residency is MA
Kris Smole
01:31:18
@Kelly Burns: Each student will need a separate FSA ID and each need a separate FAFSA profile completed. One parent ID is required.
Lindsay Louis
01:31:24
@Kathleen, they will each need their own FSA ID and a parent needs one as well
Pamela Reid
01:31:30
I have a couple of questions about items 86 and 89, which is "How much did your parent earn from working in 2020?", for each parent. My husband is disabled. He cannot work and is on permanent LTD, although he is classified by his employer as “employed”. His income comes from two sources, neither of which arrive on a W-2: Long Term Disability Insurance payments and Social Security Disability Insurance Payments (SSDI). The Social Security Disability payments are considered 85% taxable on our 1040 tax return. The Long Term Disability is non-taxable sick pay. Do either or both of these sources qualify as money “earned from working”? If the SSDI qualifies, should I include only the taxed 85% amount, or the whole amount?I work. On my W-2, Box 1 lists my compensation, and Box 12b lists deferrals to my 401k. A book I am using, “Princeton Review’s Paying for College” (p198) advises that both those amounts be counted as my money earned from working. Does this sound right?
Joanne Allen
01:31:31
On average how long does it take from submission for processing? I have notification/confirmation # its been recieved as of 10/4. But haven’t received notification of processing.
Lindsay Louis
01:31:35
You will also answer the questions to have 2 in college
Verlineca Bellange
01:31:51
What if your parents don’t want to sign for FAFSA?
Kathleen Gabriel
01:31:56
we have 529 plan for each how do we report can we break it down or hhave to put total for both on each fafsa form
Joanne Allen
01:32:12
So only one form? But two different FAFSA ID’s? For sign off
Lindsay Louis
01:32:41
@Veronica, we will review the dependency questions but it can’t solely be the parent doesn’t want to. There is more criteria we will cover
Lauren Canavan
01:32:53
What about a child whose parents live in two different homes - i.e. parents divorced? Do both have to complete or sign the form?
Jennifer Bento-Pinyoun
01:33:04
@joanne allen---one form 2 FSA ID's, one for student, one for parent to sign electronically
Lindsay Louis
01:33:07
@Joellen, no, you will need to complete a FAFSA for each student
Jennifer Bento-Pinyoun
01:33:30
Amy will address the divorce parents filing
IVAN ZHENG
01:33:34
does the Parent Income section of the FAFSA include unemployment benefits?
Lindsay Louis
01:33:35
@Lauren, the parent that provides at least 51% of the support for the child in on FAFSA
Janine Fontecchio
01:33:40
do you need the ID first or can you start filling out the form?
Lindsay Louis
01:33:58
You can start the FAFSA but you can’t formally sign without the FSA ID
Lindsay Louis
01:34:15
SO you can start, save, and once FSA ID Is verified you can then submit it formally
Kathleen Gabriel
01:34:41
how do you report 529 money if you have more than 1 child with 529 account
Rachel Vieira
01:34:52
So if my daughter is a freshman 2022, fill out the 2022 button
Wayne Meyer
01:35:12
I had to step away. Did I hear my name?
Lindsay Louis
01:35:12
@Rachel, yes, that is correct 2022-2023
Urvashi Joshi
01:35:46
Is everyone required to fill out the FAFSA form?
Lindsay Louis
01:36:03
@kathleen, Amy will answer that but it depends if it’s in your name or the student name
Pamela Reid
01:36:09
Question 92a on the FAFSA is similar to question 87 and asks about the Payments to tax-deferred pension and retirement savings plans. Both questions refes to box 12b on my 1040 tax return. Should I include the amount in Box 12b in my answers to both questions?
Laurence KOUAME
01:36:11
do both parents need to fill the form?
Mommy Uwu
01:36:35
Hello,good night
Joanne Allen
01:36:53
I received an email from US Dept of Ed as I must have started a second FAFSA app thinking there was one required for each parent and student. Any idea how can delete this?
Lindsay Louis
01:36:59
@Urvashi, no, not everyone. If you are a US Citizen or naturalized citizen, we recommend you do it at least the first time to see what you qualify for. At the minimum you will receive the federal direct loans
Lindsay Louis
01:37:36
@Laurence, only one parent needs an FSA ID to complete FAFSA, if married you need to provide spouses income as well, for both of you
Roger Cruz
01:38:12
Can the email address be changed later?
Laurence KOUAME
01:38:13
ok thank you
Kathleen Gabriel
01:38:25
2 separate 529 plans in each students name
Lindsay Louis
01:38:45
@Joanne, if you started a second by accident, you can’t delete it but it won’t go anywhere if not completed. So just ignore/disregard emails on that second app
Lindsay Louis
01:38:58
@Kathleen, each one will be listed on the student asstest
Kathleen Gabriel
01:39:13
I don't want to over report so separate amounts on each childs fafsa? for 529
Pamela Reid
01:39:15
In question 92h, which requests "Enter amounts for other untaxed income not reported, such as workers' compensation, disability benefits, etc", the FAFSA instructions say “don’t include untaxed Social Security benefits”. I assume Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) counts as Social Security. I assume this means I should add Long Term Disability benefits, but not SSDI. Is this correct?
Lindsay Louis
01:39:32
@Roger, yes, you can change the email address for the FSA ID, once it’s been verified with the social security administration
Wayne Meyer
01:39:39
We have not lived in MA for five years so we aren't eligible for the state grants?
Kathleen Gabriel
01:39:54
529 is a parent asset not student!
Mommy Uwu
01:40:19
How do I find this
Lindsay Louis
01:40:26
@Wayne, yes, that is correct. It does require citizenship for 5 years
Janine Fontecchio
01:40:29
sorry if i missed the answer already but when is this application due?
Lindsay Louis
01:40:42
@Kathleen, not if in the students name, it’s a student asset
Wayne Meyer
01:40:44
state residency, not citizenship
Lindsay Louis
01:40:58
@WAyne, yes. MA residency for 5 years for MA state grants
danny G
01:41:07
yo ill play league
Lindsay Louis
01:41:25
@janine, if depends on the institution. Typically the sooner the better.
Mark Bessell
01:41:47
Do Colleges use the FAFSA information for merit scholarship consideration?
chris lee
01:41:47
you like my cutr
Jake Mei
01:41:51
@chris lee what is your pfp
danny G
01:41:58

chris lee
01:42:02
new hair cut
Mommy Uwu
01:42:11
This is really not appreciated
Lindsay Louis
01:42:22
@mark, no, merit is solely based on academics from high school
danny G
01:42:53
@chris lee please stop it is very annoying
Roger Cruz
01:43:40
My 529s statements say Roger = Owner, FBO = my son's name so it sounds like it is my asset and not my son's right?
Kris Smole
01:44:14
529 plans are owned by the parent, and the student is the beneficiary, so the 529 plan is the parent’s asset
Joanne Allen
01:44:33
In wanting to be sure I completed properly….I am waiting for confirmation of FAFSA processing, how long from submission to processing? Or is there a way to confirm I have submitted all info correctly or possibly need to correct?
Roger Cruz
01:44:52
Yes.. that is what I have been told but in this thread it was stated that it could be under the kids names too.
Kathleen Gabriel
01:45:14
so confused now I was told 529 is parent asset not child utma and ugma differentthey are recorded as student just important because they are penalized more if student asset
Rachel Vieira
01:45:51
Does the fafsa need to be done prior to early action Nov !st
Roger Cruz
01:46:30
@kathleen check your 529 statement to see if it spells out ownership and for whose benefit.
Kris Smole
01:46:43
Yes - true. Grandparents can take them. Was speaking of the FAFSA scenario of reporting assets. Apologies for any confusion
Stacey Bodwell
01:47:32
What if grandparents own 529 with child as beneficiary… would this be parent asset?
Lindsay Louis
01:47:37
@Rachel, not necessarily. It depends if they are sending their financial aid award letter with the accept letter. If you submit the FAFSA later, you will receive a revised award letter
Lindsay Louis
01:47:47
@Stacey, no, it would be under the student.
Stacey Bodwell
01:47:58
Thank u
Joanne Allen
01:48:53
Missed the number of days…
chris lee
01:49:00

Rachel Vieira
01:49:29

Lindsay Louis
01:50:04
@Rachel, once it’s processed, usually 2-3 business days. The student will receive notification when it’s processed
chris lee
01:50:07
I was also going to ask that Rachel
Lindsay Louis
01:50:09
Then you can go back and make a change

Joanne Allen
01:51:38
What to do when processed is beyond 2-3 days? We have confirmation of received, but not processed and submitted 10/4
Rachel Vieira
01:51:41
Was there a rule, sorry I came in late
danny G
01:51:41
om gosh pelase stop @chris lee
danny G
01:52:10
No, chris lee is being a heckler
Lindsay Louis
01:53:00
@Joanne, I would suggest logging back in to see the status. If you have questions, if wouldn’t hurt to call. I know it can get backed up a little in the beginning since so many are processing. Also with the holiday, only count business days
myriam bocquillon
01:53:03
Is it possible to have a separated status for parents without a legal separation ? If yes how to justify this status ?
Joanne Allen
01:53:49
@lindsay who would one call?
Lindsay Louis
01:53:51
@Myriam, yes. You complete it as separated and it should separate out income. If married, filing jointly for the year requested you can separate income yourself based on the custodial parent’s W-2
Lindsay Louis
01:54:43
800-433-3243 or 800-4-FED-AID
danny G
01:54:51
did u just doc me?
John Fence
01:55:18
Picture day.
danny G
01:55:35
No today is a normal day
myriam bocquillon
01:55:54
I just asked on the federal student aid website through chat and they told me that without a legal statement of the separation I need to enter my info as married.
CHAU VAN
01:56:13
What type of parents if they are married but one lives in the USA as permanent resident and other lives outside USA and sometimes come to USA as a tourist?
Lindsay Louis
01:56:22
No, not unless selected for federal verification. Then the school may require additional documentation
danny G
01:56:32
🤡 Hehe these images are quite

Lauren Canavan
02:00:11
What if child lives with parents equally at each home? Do you still only select one parent to list?
Lindsay Louis
02:00:31
@Lauren, yes. It’s at least 51% of the time parent
Lindsay Louis
02:00:44
It’s not easy to determine at times but just one
Changai Xu
02:02:58
Still did not get how to do if apply more than 10 schools.
chris lee
02:03:46
So any of my dads or moms can sign off or only the biological ones
Jennifer Stebbs
02:03:46
What if my ex-significant other is out of the country and theyre not a citizen?
Bethania Nunez
02:04:13
how about if you are remarried but the step parent does not live in this country
Lindsay Louis
02:04:23
@Changai, you put the first 10 schools and submit. Wait for the FAFSA to process. Once processed, you can remove schools and add others. We recommend, keeping the top 2-3 one there so they receive any updates, if applicable
Rachel Vieira
02:04:39
Do the grand parents have to be documented on the taxes
Lindsay Louis
02:06:13
@Rachel, not, your taxes are what is required by the IRS. Unless you are supporting them and they live in your household, you put them on FAFSA
Mark Bessell
02:06:28
Do you include a dependent student graduating college in May 2022?
Jennifer Bento-Pinyoun
02:06:46
If you have more than 10 schools--submit the first 10 then wait until it processes. Once it processes you'll be able to go back in, take off colleges and add the ones you need to.
Lindsay Louis
02:06:54
@Mark, not. It will ask dates, which I believe are July 1, 2022 through June 20, 2023
Jacob N
02:07:41
sorry I'm late!
Lindsay Louis
02:07:43
Who will be enrolled in college/university during that timeframe
Kelvin Lee
02:07:45
my parents filed a 8872 form, which type of income tax would I click?
Rachel Vieira
02:08:02
Can you use the 2021 taxes
Lauren Canavan
02:08:18
Is this only the parent reporting or for both parents in the case of divorced parents
Lindsay Louis
02:08:52
@Lauren, only the custodial parent in a divorce situation. If that custodial parent is remarried, their spouse as well
IVAN ZHENG
02:09:32
does the Parent Income section of the FAFSA include unemployment benefits?
Lindsay Louis
02:09:48
@Rachel, no, FAFSA requires 2020, however, if 2021 is going to be worse. It’s what Amy is talking about right now
Jiva Sargong
02:09:51
Ooops Late! Had wrong naame. LOL
Lauren Canavan
02:10:12
So if the child resides with both parents equally but based on financial support, dad is the greater financial supporter, do we use dad’s tax return?
Jennifer Bento-Pinyoun
02:10:14
2020 taxes are used for 2022-23 application season
Lindsay Louis
02:10:31
@Ivan, not income earned but in AGI on the taxes, yes it’s included
Rachel Vieira
02:10:49
AGI what’s this mean?
Jennifer Bento-Pinyoun
02:10:56
@lauren canavan---yes, the parent who provides more financial support is on the FAFSA
Jiva Sargong
02:10:57
d'
Lindsay Louis
02:11:03
@Lauren, it’s going to be whatever parent provides at lease 51% of the support or more
John Fence
02:11:22
not appropriate
Lindsay Louis
02:11:28
AGI means Adjusted Gross Income
Bethania Nunez
02:11:38
What if my spouse is in another country and does not contribute to the household.
IVAN ZHENG
02:11:39
the IRS tool does the AGI right?
Rachel Vieira
02:11:55
TY
Lindsay Louis
02:12:07
Yes, the data retrieval tool will pull directly from the IRS and include all of that.
Jennifer Bento-Pinyoun
02:12:24
If you have a question---please type it in the chat
Jake Mei
02:12:27
sorry
Jiva Sargong
02:12:35
wait, The IRS is involved?
Jiva Sargong
02:12:45
This might be an issue
Lindsay Louis
02:12:48
We recommend as financial aid professionals to use the data retrieval tool
Rachel Vieira
02:12:50
Also how do you the use the TOOL again to pull the IRS info over
Lindsay Louis
02:13:04
It’s in the FAFSA, it will ask you if you want to use it
Rachel Vieira
02:13:14
TY
Lindsay Louis
02:13:24
Then you will have to answer some prompt questions to leave to go to IRS website
Rachel Vieira
02:13:36
Will It bring you back?
Lindsay Louis
02:13:53
Yes, it will bring you back to FAFSA when complete
Rachel Vieira
02:13:59
TY
Kris Smole
02:14:11
A recording of this presentation will be available in a week or so at https://masfaa.org/fafsaday/ for anyone who may have joined after the presentation began and wants to see and listen to the presentation from the beginning.
Jiva Sargong
02:15:09
I will be back in a second!
Jennifer Bento-Pinyoun
02:15:14
We will also follow up with an email with a link to the recording and additional resources
Jiva Sargong
02:15:18
don't want the IRS to wait for me.. LOL
John Fence
02:15:36
Haha!
Jennifer Stebbs
02:15:41
What if my information has not been updated for 3 years? Is that a major problem?
Bethania Nunez
02:15:50
What if my spouse ( step parent) is in another country and does not contribute to the household nor lives here.
Bethania Nunez
02:16:26
Does I have to include him if he doesn't live in the home
Nasreen Weralkar
02:16:33
Isn’t the AGI question duplicate from the irs data retrieval
Lindsay Louis
02:16:42
@bethania, if selected for verification or a CSS profile school they will ask for your spouses income information and want to include it, after calculated into US currency
Lauren Canavan
02:18:10
Do we include both parents financial info if parents are divorced?
Lindsay Louis
02:18:28
@Lauren, no, only the custodial parent
Pamela Reid
02:18:33
I asked a question near the start of the thread about parents who are disabled and receive SSDI. My question wasn’t answered. If you can’t answer questions this specific please let me know, so I can stop watching this chaotic chat.
John Fence
02:18:50
I have a question.
Marcia
02:19:57
I was a bit late to this event.... do you have to add college IDs to the FAFSA applications while completing it, or are colleges able to be added/changed after completing the FAFSA application?
Lauren Canavan
02:20:10
So to clarify if parents are divorced, only include the parent who is the custodial parent for the tax return info?
Joanne Allen
02:20:38
Have confirmation of received FAFSA but Can’t access the actual submitted FAFSA form to confirm data retrieval form and other information - via app now what? Who do I contact?
John Fence
02:21:26
Ima leave
Jiva Sargong
02:21:32
Bye Bye!
Lindsay Louis
02:21:35
@marcia, you can add 10 right away. Once the FAFSA has been processed, you can delete other institutions and add new ones and re-submit
Marcia
02:22:11
@Lindsey, thank you
Rachel Vieira
02:22:22
Instution aide is this the loans
Rachel Vieira
02:23:02
What percent of the current cash balance do they calculate?
myriam bocquillon
02:23:16
If I declare myself as separated but I have filed jointly my taxes with my futur ex-husband, what kind of documentation must be provided to make proof of the data entered ?
Jiva Sargong
02:23:22
Dont get them on me, or ill have to call Jacob Nikiciuck! LOL
Jiva Sargong
02:23:55
ok Im sorry LOL
Lindsay Louis
02:24:37
@Myriam, it will depend on the institution but in my experience, either proof of separation, any legal filing or proof of residing at separate households. Separate utility bills, etc.
Laurence KOUAME
02:26:48
if the student earned money in 2021 am I need to report it?
Rachel Vieira
02:27:00
How long does it take to fill out.
myriam bocquillon
02:27:04
We have still lots of entangled bills for both houses we are using separately, so I imagine that the utility bills must be under the name of each person ?
Rachel Vieira
02:27:12
Does it save, if you stop and do it the next day
Shawn Magill
02:27:14
If student did file a tax return in 2020 but won't be working once entering college - how is that calculated into the overall financial aid?
Kris Smole
02:27:47
@Rachel : Federal loan eligibility is determined by the FAFSA. Private (non-Federal) loan eligibility are not determined through the FAFSA. Institutional aid is awarded by each institution, based on their individual criteria.
Lindsay Louis
02:28:14
@shawn
Lindsay Louis
02:28:40
This is based on 2020 tax information. In 2023-2024 that information will be accounted for.
Rachel Vieira
02:29:25
Does it need to be done b4 Nov 1st Early Action?
Lindsay Louis
02:30:01
@Rachel. It all depends on the institution. I would recommend getting it done before Nov 1
Rachel Vieira
02:30:07
Ok TY
Kris Smole
02:30:37
@Laurence: student earned income for 2021 would be reported for the 2023-2024 FAFSA that would be done after October 1, 2022.
Rachel Vieira
02:30:45
What are the loans calls that you can get through the FAFSA
Patricia Lace
02:31:01
Trying to submit financial info. Many answers are zero, it won’t accept the entry.
Kris Smole
02:31:09
FAFSA determines Federal loan eligibility
Lindsay Louis
02:31:35
@Rachel, also state and federal grants, if high need situations
Rachel Vieira
02:31:40
Yes but students can get loans from the FAFSA
Lindsay Louis
02:31:57
@Rachel, yes, at the very minimum the student will receive a federal direct loan
Lindsay Louis
02:32:20
Which is a terrific student loan, if loans are needed to pay for college
Rose Jardim
02:33:35
I can't out zero in the parent untax income ??
Rachel Vieira
02:33:41
Subsidized loans
Bethania Nunez
02:33:52
where is the email to contact you
Rose Jardim
02:33:52
what do I do??
Rachel Vieira
02:33:54
Can you put your # and email in the chat?
Mary McHugh
02:33:59
for 529 plans do you put the whole amount in if its shared with 2 children or just the amount for the child going to college.
Pamela Reid
02:34:08
Thank you to the volunteers, for this presentation!
Joanne Allen
